During World War II, the U.S. was at war against Japan due to the attack on Pearl Harbor. (Here are some of the numbers after the battle of Okinawa, Japan). This battle, off the coast of Japan, took place in April of 1945. The U.S. military is broken up into divisions and during this battle, the 72th, 96th, 27th, 81st, and the 7th army divisions were involved. The 6th, 2nd, and 1st divisions for the Marines were also part of this battle, along with air reinforcement and navel and ground units as back-up. there are three islands of the coast of Japan, in which, there was a battle taking place. For example, on Iwo Jima, there was a historic battle taking place.

The Battle

The Battle of Okinawa last for about 87 days. The battle started on March 18, 1945 and ended on June 23, 1945. During this time, there was around 12,500 allied casualties and around 66,000 Japanese dead or missing. This battle was definetly not as bad as Iwo Jima, but after all casualties were counted up, it was pretty bad. But it wasn't only the soldiers that were killed, many Japanese civilians were also killed. Over 100,000 Japanese civilians were either dead or missing after the battle was over. The main battle plan was called Operation ICEBURG. The Japanese main plan of attack was called Operation Ten-Go. The idea was to use a Kamikaze to blow up U.S. navel forces. However, the plan never worked due to the lead ship, the Yamato, was sunk along with 8 other Japanese destroyers, which denied the Japanese plan.
